2026 GR Corolla Review: Fun, Pricey, Still the Value Pick

The Drive spent a week with the 300-hp rally hatch and says it's a blast, but the base model is the better buy.

The Drive has published its review of the 2026 Toyota GR Corolla, and the verdict is mostly positive. The publication spent a week driving the rally-bred hatchback in Heavy Metal gray, taking it up mountains, down the coast, and through rush-hour traffic.

According to The Drive, the GR Corolla is a joy to drive under almost every condition. The author notes that any faults are minor nitpicks, and in any other context, it would be difficult to find a major complaint. The car balances analog and digital, performance and comfort well.

Price is where things get complicated. The Drive's tester was the Premium Plus trim with a starting price of $47,160 and an as-tested price of $49,383. The author suggests opting for the base model to get the core GR experience without the added cost. Even then, the GR Corolla comes in at thousands less than other 300-ish-horsepower AWD hatches in the U.S. market.

Comparisons to rivals like the Elantra N, Golf GTI, or Civic Si show that the GR Corolla is at a premium, but none of those cars offer the same power or drivetrain. The Drive concludes that when it comes to fun, fast cars you can drive daily without spending huge sums of money, it's hard to find a better option.

The bottom line: the 2026 GR Corolla remains the value option among 300-hp AWD hot hatches, but you'll want to stick with the base trim to keep the price in check.
