Jaguar Type 01: 1,015-hp EV with 400-mile range for $130,500

The production version of Jaguar's polarizing electric car is here, with tri-motor power and a price that undercuts some rivals.

The production version of the Jaguar Type 01 has debuted in New York City, Jalopnik reports. The electric car has up to 1,015 horsepower from a tri-motor configuration and an estimated 400-mile range from a 118-kWh battery pack. Jaguar says it can do 320 miles at 75 mph on the highway. The starting price is $130,500, with order books opening in early 2027.

The Type 01 is a four-door that stays close to the controversial Type 00 concept, Jalopnik writes. The car is 208 inches long and 55 inches tall, with 21-inch wheels standard and 23-inch wheels available. It has a drag coefficient of 0.23, a three-stage spoiler, and a body that lowers by more than half an inch at high speed. A single stamped panel called the Impossible Panel required 1,500 hours of engineering and a six-step cold forming process with 2,500 tons of pressure. Jalopnik notes that the panel has multiple planes and acute angles that industry wisdom says should not work. The rear end has over a dozen vertical strakes that hide full-width taillights.

The front axle is powered by a 349-hp motor, and the rears get two 416-hp motors. The car reaches 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and takes 4 seconds to go from 62 to 112 mph. Dynamic air suspension with twin-valve dampers adjusts 1,000 times per second, and rear-wheel steering gives it the turning radius of a BMW 3 Series. The 850-volt system can charge at up to 350 kW, which adds 200 miles in 13 minutes or takes the battery from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes. AC and DC ports are on the front fenders, and Jaguar says it will be NACS compatible.

The cabin includes a 24-inch OLED gauge cluster and a 7-inch touchscreen on the center console for climate and media. A rear-view camera display sits in a Panoramic Soundbar with 13 speakers as part of a 38-speaker Meridian system. The rear seats fold flat to offer up to 35 cubic feet of cargo space. Heated and cooled rear seats and a hot stone massage feature for the front seats are also included.

Jalopnik notes the base price undercuts a Porsche Taycan 4S and likely the Mercedes-AMG GT55. It is about $15,000 more than a Lucid Air Grand Touring. A fully loaded model may cost around $200,000, which still compares well with its competitors.

Jaguar is offering five gloss colors and three satin finishes at launch, plus a 60-unit Chromatic Moments series with French Ultramarine or London Red. The Type 01 is the first car on Jaguar's new Electric Architecture platform. Prototype drives suggest the car weighs close to 6,000 pounds, according to Jalopnik. Despite the weight, Jalopnik writes, the Type 01 has no direct competitor on the market.
