2027 BMW iX4: Electric Crossover Coupe Gets 428-Mile Estimate, 603-HP M60 Coming

BMW’s Neue Klasse coupe-SUV is the third model in the lineup, with a dramatically sloped roof and a starting price of $66,200.

BMW is betting the niche holds. The 2027 iX4, revealed this week, is the coupe version of the electric iX3 SUV, and it arrives with a more aggressive roofline than any of the automaker’s previous crossover coupes, Jalopnik reports.

BMW kicked off the crossover coupe craze with the first-generation X6 in 2007. Two decades later, the segment has competition from dozens of automakers, and BMW is going all-electric with its newest offering. The iX4 is the third production model on the Neue Klasse platform, following the iX3 and the upcoming electric M3.

From 2021 through 2025, BMW sold about 10,000 X4s per year in the U.S. versus roughly 70,000 X3s. Jalopnik notes that’s not bad for a niche vehicle, and it’s enough to justify the iX4.

The numbers

The iX4 50 xDrive starts at $66,200 before destination, which Jalopnik reports will likely be the same $1,350 as the iX3. That’s $4,700 more than a base iX3 50, but the gap narrows to $2,200 when you factor in the iX4’s standard M Sport package.

Dual electric motors send 463 hp and 475 lb-ft to all four wheels. BMW says it hits 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The 112.2-kWh battery pack can DC fast-charge at up to 400 kW, adding 184 miles in 10 minutes or going from 10% to 80% in 21 minutes.

BMW estimates the iX4 50 xDrive will have up to 428 miles of range, Jalopnik reports. The iX3 50 xDrive has a 434-mile EPA rating, though BMW originally estimated only 400 miles for that model, so the publication speculates the iX4 could earn 450 miles from the EPA.

Even with optional 21- or 22-inch wheels and summer tires, Jalopnik writes the iX4 should manage at least 390 miles of range. The iX3 gets 392 EPA-rated miles on the same setup.

The M60 arrives later

A few months after the iX4 50 goes on sale in late 2027, BMW will launch an iX4 M60 with over 600 hp. Jalopnik reports the M60 will produce 603 hp and 645 lb-ft, hitting 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 149 mph.

The M60 adds an electronically controlled M Sport rear differential, M Sport drive modes and sound profiles, adaptive M suspension with its own spring and damper tuning, anti-roll bar links on the front axle, and M Sport brakes. There will almost certainly be an iX4 M with a quad-motor powertrain shared with the electric M3, Jalopnik says.

Looks are the point

Below the beltline, the iX4 is identical to the iX3 in length, wheelbase, and width. The bumper and side skirt designs are the same. The taillight graphics differ slightly, and the tailgate looks nearly the same from the taillights down.

The roofline is the main event. Jalopnik describes it as more dramatically raked and wedgy than any previous BMW crossover coupe, with the rear shoulders and D-pillar resolved so the roof flows into the flush rear glass.

BMW says the iX4 has a drag coefficient of 0.23, a tick better than the iX3. Jalopnik notes the sleeker roof should translate to longer range, though official EPA numbers aren’t available yet.

Interior and cargo

Up front, the iX4 shares BMW’s new iDrive and Panoramic Vision setup. The M60 gets optional M Sport seats with better bolstering, illuminated logos, and massage. Standard interior is black Veganza leatherette with M PerformTex inserts, or Adelaide Grey Merino leather. The iX4 50 adds Digital White, Castanea red, or Agave Green.

BMW didn’t release cargo space figures, Jalopnik reports. Based on the X3 and X4, the sloping roof will cut significantly into rear cargo room with the second-row seats up, though photos suggest decent space with seats folded. The rear seat appears spacious, helped by the lack of a transmission tunnel.

Production and timing

BMW will build the iX4 at its Debrecen, Hungary, plant, the same factory as the iX3. Jalopnik reports the 50 xDrive model starts at $66,200, with U.S. delivery timing still unknown.

Jalopnik’s take: Be grateful someone is still making niche body styles. BMW is also working on two-door i4 coupe and convertible variants.
