2027 Jaguar Type 01: 1,016 HP, 400-Mile Range, $130K

Jaguar's radical all-electric grand tourer arrives mid-2027 with a bespoke platform, dramatic design, and a promise to reinvent the brand.

MotorTrend reports that the 2027 Jaguar Type 01 is the company's most consequential car in decades. The all-electric grand tourer starts around $130,000 and lands in the U.S. in mid-2027.

It rides on a new platform called JEA, built from scratch because no existing architecture could support the extreme proportions of the design. The battery is 118 kWh and delivers an EPA-rated 400 miles of range. The 850-volt system can add 200 miles in 13 minutes on a 350-kW charger. In the U.S., owners will have access to Tesla's Supercharger network.

Three electric motors produce a claimed 1,016 horsepower and 1,006 lb-ft of torque. Two motors at the rear are from American supplier Dana, and the front motor was developed in-house. The car hits 60 mph in just over 3.0 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 150 mph. At steady highway speeds, the rear motors shut off and the front motor handles cruising alone, adding 18 miles of range.

The design comes from the Project Pantera clay model, kept nearly unchanged in production. Every surface is within 0.3 inch of the original. The body is aluminum, including a 118-inch side panel engineers called "impossible." The drag coefficient is 0.23, making it the most aerodynamic production Jaguar ever. Active cooling shutters and an active rear spoiler help. Air suspension drops the car 0.6 inch above 65 mph.

Inside, the driver faces a 24-inch OLED screen. A pair of 7.0-inch portrait screens handle front and rear controls. The Meridian sound system hides all 23 speakers. Most functions use AI voice control, which the brand says can handle commands like "I'm cold, and I'd like to drive home."

Practicality takes a hit. The cabin is tight for rear passengers, with limited knee and headroom for six-footers. The lack of a rear window and narrow door openings make it difficult to enter. Cargo space is an open shelf behind the seats. MotorTrend calls it a 2+2 in practice, with less room than the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe or the Ferrari Luce.

"The person who drives this car should wear a cape," a British customer told Jaguar boss Rawdon Glover after seeing the car. That reaction is exactly what Jaguar wants. The Type 01 is meant to be a statement, not just a sedan. Glover called it one of the most important launches in Jaguar's 90-year history.

For the money, the Type 01 undercuts the Cadillac Celestiq by more than 60 percent while delivering similar drama. It's a lot of car for $130,000, but buyers should be ready for tight rear quarters and an unconventional interior. The real question is whether Jaguar can pull off a full brand reboot on a single model.
