2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE: Stronger Engines, Softer Ride

MotorTrend reports the 2027 GLE gets new engines, a Superscreen dashboard, and a very soft ride.

MotorTrend reports that the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE is more than a mid-cycle refresh. Mercedes calls it a "complete new car in old clothing," and while MotorTrend says that's a stretch, the updates under the skin are substantial. The GLE now shares hardware and software with the S-Class and GLS, including the MB.OS platform that enables over-the-air updates.

Pricing starts at $69,850 for the four-cylinder GLE350, $76,250 for the six-cylinder GLE450, $82,450 for the GLE500e plug-in hybrid, and $97,750 for the V-8 GLE580. The coupe version is available only as a GLE450 at $82,750. All include 4Matic four-wheel drive but not options, which MotorTrend notes "can get very pricey." The publication drove a GLE500e optioned to $106,080.

The biggest cabin change is the Superscreen, a glass panel that spans most of the dashboard but houses three separate 12.3-inch displays. MotorTrend found it less impressive than a single continuous screen like the Cadillac Escalade IQ's. The driver's side offers multiple display modes with a 3D effect. A head-up display projects augmented reality arrows for navigation. Physical climate controls remain, but the center console still uses the trackpad from the 2020 model.

Under the hood, the plug-in hybrid swaps its four-cylinder for a 3.0-liter six-cylinder, boosting total output to 429 horsepower and 502 pound-feet. Mercedes expects up to 60 miles of electric range. The V-8 in the GLE580 gets a new flat-plane crankshaft and now produces 530 hp and 553 lb-ft. The nine-speed automatic is slow to respond to quick throttle inputs, but the PHEV's electric boost covers that fault.

MotorTrend describes the air-sprung suspension's ride as "like a dreamy theater with passing scenery projected on its giant windows."

The air suspension is very soft. On uneven pavement, the body motion can cause motion sickness. MotorTrend advises a test drive on rough roads, especially for sensitive passengers. Switching to Sport mode firms things up, but the difference is subtle. The coupe's tuning is slightly stiffer.

MotorTrend praises the engines' smoothness, particularly the six-cylinder's near-silent ignition. The PHEV transitions between electric and engine power seamlessly.

On the tech side, the MB.Drive lane-centering system is hands-on, and the automated lane-change feature worked intermittently. Mercedes promises a future OTA update to deliver "Level 2++" automation, but MotorTrend thinks the system needs improvement.

The 2027 GLE goes on sale late 2026. For buyers who want a roomy, comfortable, tech-forward luxury SUV that borrows from Mercedes' top models, this is a solid choice. Those seeking cutting-edge styling might prefer the BMW X5.
