BMW iX5 spotted in US with new Double-X headlights

Electrek reports that a pre-production 2027 iX5 was seen testing ahead of its early-2027 US launch, with a 144-kWh battery, estimated 435-mile EPA range, and a $79,800 starting price.

Reported by Electrek, a pre-production BMW iX5 was spotted testing in the US this week, giving the first real-world look at the electric SUV's new headlight design.

The iX5 goes on sale in the US in early 2027, after BMW opened European orders this week. It's the first fully electric version of the X5, joining gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen variants.

In the US, the 2027 iX5 60 xDrive will use a 144-kWh battery, BMW's largest EV battery. BMW estimates EPA range at up to 435 miles. The European model uses a 141-kWh pack and is rated for 525 miles on the WLTP cycle.

The dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain makes 578 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque, reaching 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. DC fast charging at up to 460 kW can fill the battery from 10% to 80% in 23 minutes. The iX5 also supports bidirectional charging, so owners can power external devices.

The iX5 is the first all-electric vehicle built at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, with production starting by the end of this year.

The new "Double-X" headlights combine low beams, daytime running lights, side lights and turn signals into a single unit. Standard LED lights can be configured to show the Double-X icons or simpler diagonal stripes.

BMW lists the US starting price at $79,800, plus a $1,450 destination fee. That's lower than the European equivalent of about $115,000.
