BMW M3 EV: Production Model Teased in New Photos

Car and Driver reports that the upcoming electric M3 sedan keeps much of the Concept M Neue Klasse's look, with a quad-motor setup and track-ready battery.

New photos released this week show the production version of BMW's first fully electric M3, heavily influenced by the Concept M Neue Klasse that debuted in June, Car and Driver reports.

The M3 EV will sit atop the i3 hierarchy, BMW's electric range of the next-generation 3-series arriving next year. Car and Driver notes that BMW announced a quad-motor setup for the M3 in 2024, with one electric motor per wheel. The system can switch between all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive depending on conditions. A track-ready battery pack offers higher peak output and adds chassis stiffness.

Design evolution

Most of the original Neue Klasse styling carries over to the production M3 EV, Car and Driver says. The front headlights, kidney grille layout, hood's V-shaped indent, hood scoop, and "track lights"—a new M performance staple—all remain similar to the concept.

Some elements have been toned down. The massive air intakes on the concept now feature a sweeping shape along the front and rear bumpers. The fenders appear slightly thinner than the concept's wide flares. Mirror caps, once square, now have a rounder shape with a flicked outer edge.

At the rear, the track lights reappear along the outer bumper edges. The trunk swaps sharp body lines around the BMW badge for a smoother tail with a small spoiler.

Production timeline

BMW will build the M3 alongside the i3 lineup at its Munich, Germany factory. Beginning in 2027, Car and Driver reports, the plant will produce only electric vehicles. BMW has not released pricing or production dates, but Car and Driver expects the 2028 M3 EV to be revealed sometime in 2027.
