BYD Great Tang SUV tops 10,000 sales for 3 months straight

BYD's flagship electric SUV, the Great Tang, has sold over 10,000 units each month since its June launch in China, according to the automaker's September sales figures.

BYD's full-size flagship SUV, the Great Tang, is off to a fast start in China. The automaker reported that September sales reached 13,010 units, marking the third consecutive month above 10,000 since the model launched in mid-June.

Total sales since launch stand at 40,222, Electrek reports, citing BYD's sales data. The company had already logged more than 150,000 preorders before deliveries began, a record for any single BYD vehicle.

The Great Tang is available as a pure electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid. The base Premium EV trim, priced at 239,900 yuan (about $35,500), uses a 105.79 kWh battery. The Flagship EV trim, at 269,900 yuan (roughly $40,000), packs a 130.15 kWh battery.

BYD claims a CLTC range of up to 590 miles for the Flagship trim. That's China's test cycle, not the EPA's, so real-world range will likely be lower. The SUV rides on a 1,000-volt architecture with flash-charging capability: from 10% to 70% in five minutes, and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.

The Great Tang measures 5,263 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall, with a 3,130 mm wheelbase. For context, that's larger than the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9, and about the same footprint as the Li Auto L9. It features a 2+2+3 seven-seat layout, a first for a production vehicle in China, BYD says.

BYD executive vice president Stella Li told Electrek that the Great Tang will reach Europe and other overseas markets by the end of 2026 or early 2027. No U.S. launch has been announced.
