Rivian R1 and R2 get Ghostbusters Halloween update with Bill Murray cameo

Rivian's 2026 Halloween costume update turns its R1 and R2 into Ghostbusters-themed vehicles with lights, sounds, games, and a short film starring Bill Murray.

Rivian is rolling out another Halloween update, reported by Electrek, and this year it is Ghostbusters-themed. The update, available as part of software versions 2026.36.0 on the R1 and 2026.36.40 on the R2, adds optional cosmetic changes to the vehicle's user interface.

The features include new light sequences, sounds, and an eerie voice for Rivian's voice assistant. Two games are also included: a scavenger hunt for hidden characters in the interface and a Ghostbusters-themed game playable on the center display while parked.

The update extends to Rivian's mobile and watch apps and to the charging experience on Rivian's charging stations through their built-in screens. The mobile app is used to control and apply the costume.

Rivian also created a one-off ECTO-R1, an R1S dressed up like the Ghostbusters' classic Ectomobile, which was based on a 1959 Cadillac in the movie. The ECTO-R1 appears in a short Halloween spot starring Bill Murray, following last year's Knight Rider-themed spot with David Hasselhoff.

Halloween mode is active from October 9 through November 2.
