Rivian R1S Gets Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Treatment

The electric SUV gets vintage lights, a radar dish, and a new Halloween app in a collaboration with Sony Pictures.

Rivian has turned its R1S into a Ghostbusters Ecto-1, complete with functional roof gear and a themed in-vehicle app. The Drive reported Thursday that the Ecto-R1, as Rivian calls it, debuted alongside the company's new Ghostbusters app, part of this year's Halloween Mode.

The build starts with the R1S's 22-inch Aero wheels, which get brightened and fitted with painted white covers. The iconic red graphic runs across the body, and the No-Ghost logo appears on the hood and front doors. But the roof rack is the showpiece. Rivian says every accessory on top is functional: sirens, spotlights, a radar dish, and side tanks. There's also a compass visible only from above. The emergency lights aren't modern recreations; Rivian said it sourced vintage lights and restored them.

Fans can see the Ecto-R1 at Rivian spaces in Laguna Beach, Austin, Venice, Miami Brickell, San Francisco, and New York City's Meatpacking District, where limited-edition merch will also be sold. The Drive notes Minneapolis isn't on the list, which feels personal.

For Rivian owners, the new in-vehicle Ghostbusters app transforms the displays into a Ghostbuster mode while parked, and Rivian says it stays active once the vehicle shifts into Drive. A Trick or Treat Mode takes over the driver and rear displays, plays the Ghostbusters theme, and triggers exterior lights and sound effects. Owners can control it via the Rivian smartphone app.

The sound and light show offers Ecto-1, Proton Pack, Slimer, Ghost Trap, Peter Venkman, or Random, each paired with custom LED sequences. Lock sounds can switch to Ecto-1 mode on Gen 1 R1 models, or Proton Pack or Chant on Gen 2 R1s and the R2. A new Mallow Mash arcade game lets parked owners pop Mini-Pufts marshmallow men while charging.

The Halloween update with the Ghostbusters app launches Oct. 9 and runs until Nov. 2.
